How to compare the quality of aluminum profiles
Jun 22,2012
The quality of aluminum profiles is assessed based on five key aspects: surface quality, mechanical properties, geometric dimensions, chemical composition, and coating thickness. However, these evaluations typically require specialized expertise and advanced testing equipment for accurate inspection and determination. In everyday situations where such resources aren’t available, assessments should instead focus on the following areas.
1. Minimum Wall Thickness for Profiles: National Standard GB5237—2008 "Aluminum Alloy Architectural Profiles, Part 1—Base Material" explicitly stipulates that the minimum wall thickness of profiles is a mandatory requirement. Specifically, the minimum thickness for interior window profiles must be no less than 0.97 mm, while exterior door and window profiles must have a minimum wall thickness of at least 1.4 mm.
II. Thickness of Oxide and Composite Coatings The oxide layer, composite coatings, and surface films play a critical role in providing corrosion protection for aluminum alloy profiles, directly influencing the material's resistance to corrosion, wear, and weathering. The national standard GB 5237—2008 "Aluminum Alloy Architectural Profiles" sets strict guidelines for the thickness of oxide coatings, electrophoretic paint films, and powder-coating layers: - Anodized oxide film: 8–10 micrometers (Grade AA10). - Electrophoretic paint composite film: 18–20 micrometers. - Powder coating: 40–80 micrometers.
III. Chemical Composition Chemical composition is a critical quality indicator for aluminum profiles and serves as the essential prerequisite for ensuring profile quality. In qualified profiles, the impurity levels of elements such as iron, copper, and manganese do not exceed 0.10% per individual element. Visually, there should be no hazy or dull appearance, and when cut with a saw, the fracture should show no cracks—instead, the saw cut should remain smooth and perfectly even.
4. Surface Quality and Geometric Dimensions: Qualified profiles exhibit no bending, twisting, or warping, and can be easily pulled after assembly. The surface feels smooth and pleasant to the touch, with no noticeable color variations. Extrusion marks are evenly distributed, completely invisible to the touch, and free from white or black lines. Additionally, there is no oil contamination, and the end faces show no obvious signs of electrical burns.
